I was talking to Liezl van Zyl about hair colour when we ended up in a vineyard, which is not as large a detour as it sounds. Liezl is a Cape Town hairdresser. Her work is physical, skilled and stubbornly attached to another human being; you cannot automate a haircut by sending somebody a very good paragraph about one. But when we talked about machines taking work, she didn’t protect her own profession and stop there. She thought about the people whose work had already gone.
