I met Donald Shaw over coffee at Coffee Bloc in Buitenverwachting. The man at the next table was eighty-five, and had started at Kodak in 1958, when a business call from Durban to Johannesburg was booked through a switchboard and could take two hours to come through.
It takes two hours. And they take these cords and put them in a board. And that’s how difficult it was to do a phone call in those days.
